About the Veg Challenge

Q: I'm already a vegan/vegetarian, can I still take the challenge?

A: Yes! However, vegans/vegetarians must join a team, and must have at least one non-veg on their team!

Q: Do I have to be on a team?

A: Teams can have between 1-4 members, so if you'd prefer to take the challenge alone, that's fine by us! Although you won't have other members to help you earn points, you won't have to share your prize when you win!

Q: Can I have 5+ people on my team?

A: No, sorry! Teams can have between 1-4 members. If you've got more than 4 break into two teams and face off!

Q: How can I check how many points my team has?

A: Email SAVVYRochester@gmail.com with your name and we'll get back to you by the end of the day.

Q: I just found out about the VegChallenge, but it's already past week 1. Can I still take the challenge?

A: Absolutely, welcome aboard.

Q: How do you know that I'm really not eating X?

A: We trust you! We hope that by agreeing to take the challenge, you will be giving it your all! However, it's common when starting a new diet to make mistakes, and that's okay. Don't feel bummed out if you slip up; just get back on track and keep going. It gets easier, we promise.

Q: I'm already a vegan/vegetarian, can I still take the challenge?

A: Yes! However, vegans/vegetarians must join a team with at least one omnivore to help motivate them to complete the challenge.

About the Vegan Diet

Q: Where do I get my protein?

A: Don't worry, there are a lot of vegan sources of protein! The average adult needs between 40-60 grams of protein a day, which you can find in foods such as nut-based milks (7-9g/cup), tofu (9g/4oz), tempeh (30g!!/cup), quinoa (9g/cup), spinach (7g/cup), peas (9g/cup), and lentils (18g/cup), just to name a few. Learn more about vegan nutrition here.

Q: Can I be vegan if I'm an athlete?

A: Definitely. Famous athletes like Mike Tyson and Serena Williams follow a vegan diet. There are numerous healthy plant based sources of proteins and other essential nutrients, and these sources are higher in fiber and free of cholesterol, which is great to support the cardiac function of athletes. Learn more about vegan nutrition here.

Q: Where do I get my calcium?

A: Just like protein, there are many vegan sources of calcium. An average adult needs about 1,000mg - 1,200mg of calcium per day, depending on age. Here are some vegan sources that can get you there: white beans (191mg/cup), kale (188mg/2 cups), almonds (72mg/20 nuts), oranges (65mg), and may others! Learn more about nutrition here.

Q: What's the problem with eggs and dairy?

A: Cows used for dairy, just like other mammals, must have recently given birth in order to product milk. They are repeatedly impregnated, and their calves are taken from them shortly after birth to be sold to the veal industry or killed. Cows used for dairy are typically slaughtered after just a few years, as their milk production decreases with age. A cow's natural lifespan is 20 years. The egg industry is responsible for the slaughter for millions of baby male chicks per year. Learn more about these industries here.
